Nifty ends below 17100, Sensex down 289 pts amid volatility

 

Sensex & Nifty at close:  Indian stock market indexes closed lower after a volatile session on Thursday amid weak global cues. The domestic markets fell sharply in the last hour on the back of selling in banking and financial stocks. The volatility in the markets was due to the expiry of weekly index options 0n the NSE. 

The Nifty 50 index closed lower by 75 points or 0.44 percent and closed at 17076.90 levels while the Sensex was down by 289.31 points or 0.50 percent and finished at 57925.28 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended lower by 382.15 points or 0.96 percent on the spot level and closed at 39616.90 levels

The broader markets closed lower in line with the benchmarks today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 123.90 points or 0.41 percent and closed at 29916.70 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 39.90 points or 0.43 percent at 9075.50 levels.

 

Nifty top gainers & losers 

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Hindalco, Maruti, Nestle, Bharti Airtel, and JSW Steel and the top losers were SBI, Bajaj Auto, Kotak Bank, Asian Paints, and HCL Tech

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Coromandel Int, OIL India, and Prestige Estate  and the top losers were Page India, ABFRL, PNB  

The smallcap top gainers were Aegis Chemical, Angel One, and Anupam Rasayan  while the top losers were BCG, Shobha, and Network 18

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, Reliance, and ICICI Bank. The most active stocks in terms of volume were SBI, Tata Steel, and ICICI Bank

On the sectoral front, FMCG, Pharma, and Metal closed higher. The sectors that closed lower were  PSU Bank, Realty, Nifty Bank, and Financial Services.

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, other Asian markets were closed mostly higher on Thursday as US Fed’s rate hike was in line with expectations. Hang Seng gained more than 2% due to a rally in tech stocks after tech giant Tencent rallied around 8% on Thursday. Japan closed marginally lower while the Shanghai index ended higher on Thursday. 

Asian currencies strengthen against the greenback as the US dollar index fell after the US fed raised interest rates and hinted to end the rate hike cycle. Indonesian stock markets are closed today due to New Year Holiday.

European stock market indexes are trading lower, as investors are looking ahead to the Bank of England’s (BoE) monetary policy decision, which is due later in the day.
