Nifty Closes Above 21,150, Sensex Surges 930 Points on Positive US Market Signals

Sensex and Nifty Today 14 December 2023: Indian stock markets ended with robust gains on Thursday, amid positive cues from Wall Street overnight. The domestic indices opened a gap-up and continued their northward journey. The sentiments were positive as US Treasury yields fell after the US Federal Reserve kept the rates unchanged and signaled more cuts than expected in 2024.

Bulls continued to roar over Dalal Street on Thursday, with Sensex and Nifty holding strong gains and hitting a record high. Sentiments were also positive, as Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that foreign investors should explore business opportunities in India as it provides a huge domestic market and investment-friendly environment. 

Meanwhile, investors ignored the report that India’s inflation based on the wholesale price index (WPI) rose 0.26 percent in November at an 8-month high driven by the increase in prices of food articles. In October, the WPI inflation was – 0.52 percent.

 

Sensex and Nifty Today

 

The Nifty index closed higher by 256.35 points or 1.23 percent and closed at 21182.70 levels while the Sensex was up by 929.61 points or 1.34 percent and finished at 70514.21 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 640.05 points or 1.36 percent on the spot level and closed at 47732.30 levels.

The broader markets also closed higher in line with their larger peers today, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 587 points or 1.31 percent and closed at 45534.30 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended higher by 124.35 points or 0.85 percent at 14780.90 levels.

 

Nifty 50 Top Gainers & Losers 

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were TechM, LTIM, Infy, Wipro, and HCLTech, and the top losers were Power Grid, HDFC Life, NestleIndia, Cipla, andTata Consumer.

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were IRFC, SAIL, and Mphasis and the top losers were MFSL, Maxhealth, and Zeel.

The smallcap top gainers were HUDCO, Sonata Software, and Cyient while the top losers were Century Textiles, Radico, and CESC.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, Reliance, and Infy. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, Power Grid, and NTPC.

On the sectoral front, barring Media all other sectoral indices closed in the green with Realty, IT, and Financial Services gaining the most.

 

Global Stock Market Updates Today

 

The other Asian stock market indexes mostly closed higher on Thursday, tracking positive cues from Wall Street overnight, as the Federal Reserve kept the interest rates unchanged and signaled three rate cuts in 2024. Japan’s Nikkei ended lower by 0.73%, while Australia’s S&P ASX 200 gained by 1.65% to its highest level in the last four months.

South Korea’s Kospi ended higher by 1.34%. Shanghai index erased early gains and closed lower by 0.33%, while Hang Seng ended higher by 1.06% in the last-hour rally. The Straits Times, Taiwan, SET Composite, and Jakarta also ended higher on positive global cues.

European stock market indexes are trading higher on Thursday as the Federal Reserve signaled interest rate cuts early next year. The Bank of England and the European Central Bank will announce their final policy announcements for 2023 later during the day.
