Closing Bell:  Sensex, Nifty end higher led by Pharma, Financial stocks

 

Indian stock market indexes opened lower as indicated by the SGX Nifty in the morning today. The Nifty index opened at 16937.75 levels, down by 66 points while Sensex made a negative opening of 175.98 points at 56948.33 levels. The key benchmark indices bounced back after a few minutes of trading in the morning deals.

The Indian equity benchmark managed to trade in green in the afternoon session despite a negative opening in the morning. The domestic market sentiments were impacted by positive cues from other Asian markets as Singapore manufacturing data showed double-digit growth in November. The broader markets also traded in the green while following their larger peers.

Meanwhile, traders took note of Securities and Exchange Board of India data that the value of P-note investments in Indian markets – equity, debt, and hybrid securities- was Rs 94,826 crore by November end as compared to Rs 102,553 crore by October end.

On the global front, some regional markets were having an extended holiday today for Christmas. Asian and European markets are trading almost flat to negative today with very low volume, as traders are in a holiday mood.

 

Sensex and Nifty at the Close

At the close, Nifty gained by 85.50 points or 0.49 percent and closed at 17086.25 levels while Sensex was up by 295.93 points or 0.52 percent and finished at 57420.24 levels. The Bank Nifty index also gained today, it was up by 200.85 points or 0.58 percent on spot levels and ended at 35057.90 levels.

The broader markets also closed higher today, following their larger peers. The Nifty midcap index was up by 130.30 points or 0.44 percent and closed at 29743.15 levels. The Nifty smallcap index gained by 22.20 points or 0.20 percent and finished at 10871.60 levels.

 

Nifty Gainers and Losers Today

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Tech M, Cipla, Dr. Reddy, UPL, and Kotak Bank. Whereas the top losers were Hindalco, ONGC, Britannia, IndusInd Bank, Grasim.

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were GMR Infra, Navin Fluorine, and Natco Pharma and the losers were RBL Bank, Zee Entertainment, and Dhani Services.

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were Suntek Realty, Happiest Minds, and Vakrangee, and the losers were Tanla Platforms, Radico Khaitan, and BEML.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were IndusInd Bank, TechM, and Bajaj Finance. The most active stocks in terms of volume were IndusInd Bank, Tata Motors, and SBI.

On a sectoral front, Pharma, Financial Services, and  IT & Software led the rally today. The sectors that closed in the red today were Media, FMCG, and Metal.
