Nifty ends above 17700, Sensex up 415 pts, Energy, IT shine

 

Sensex & Nifty 50 at close: Indian stock markets indexes trimmed some of their intraday gains on Monday. The traders preferred to book some profit at higher levels ahead of the NSE/BSE holiday on 7th March on account of the Holi Celebration. Some cautiousness was also seen ahead of the US Fed Chair Powell’s testimony, which is due later this week.

The Nifty 50 index closed higher by 117.10 points or 0.67 percent and closed at 17711.45 levels while the Sensex gained by 415.49 points or 0.69 percent and finished at 60224.46 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 99.05 points or 0.24 percent on the spot level and closed at 41350.40 levels

The broader markets outperformed the frontline index today, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 262.40 points or 0.85 percent and closed at 30960.05 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed higher by 104.75 points or 1.12 percent at 9442.10 levels.

 

Nifty 50 top gainers & losers 

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Adani Enterprise, Tata Motors, ONGC, NTPC, and Power Grid and the top losers were Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Hindalco, IndusInd Bank, and LT

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were JSW Energy, GSPL, and Patanjali Foods, and the top losers were Zeel, Dal Bharat, and Indian Bank

The smallcap top gainers were MGL, BSE, and JSL while the top losers were  Indigo Paints, Alok Industries, and MMTC

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Adani Enterp, Adani Port, and HDFC Bank. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, Adani Ports, and Adani Enterp

On the sectoral front, barring PSU Bank and Realty all other sectors closed in the green today. The sectors that led the gains were Energy, IT, Auto, and Financial Services.

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, Asian markets were mostly closed in green, amid reports that South Korea`s consumer prices for February grew at their slowest pace in 10 months. Investors are in view that the central bank will end its current policy tightening cycle after it held rates steady last month. 

Shanghai closed lower, as investors further digested China’s growth target set in its parliamentary sessions and looked ahead to a week of economic data. European key stock market indexes are trading mixed, as investors are looking for Fed’s chair Powell’s speech and US unemployment data to be released during the week
