Indian Stock Market Weekly Update (16- 20 Jan): Indian stock market ended with modest gains for the second consecutive week of 2023. The equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty advanced 0.60 percent and 0.40 percent respectively during the week that ended 20 January. The equity benchmarks gained two out of five trading sessions during the week.

The market sentiments were positive in the first half of the week due to a decline in WPI inflation and positive global cues mainly from Europe and Asian markets. However, In the latter half, the weak economic data from the U.S. markets and hawkish comments from the US Fed officials fueled the rate hike fear and recession worries among investors. On the domestic front, the decline in export, muted corporate earnings, and selling pressure from FIIs capped the markets on the higher side.

Among the sectors, IT, Banks, and Realty sectors gained while Media, PSU Bank, and Auto sectors declined more than a percent during the week. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were the net sellers in the Indian equity markets, they offloaded Rs 2461.03 crore worth of shares while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought Rs 3383.72 crore during the week.

Indian Stock Market Indexes ( 16- 20 Jan)

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 360.59 points or 0.60%, and closed at 60621.77, while the Nifty was up by 71.05 points or 0.40%, and ended at 18027.65 levels. The Bank Nifty index advanced for the week by 135.55 points or 0.32 % and finished at 42506.8 levels.

The broader markets underperformed the benchmarks during the week. The Nifty midcap index ended lower by only 228.55 points or 0.73 percent, and at 31099.8 levels. The Nifty small-cap index closed lower by 106.6 points or 1.10 percent and ended at 9569.1 levels during the week.
