Nifty, Sensex end near the day’s low; FMCG, Metals drag
Sensex and Nifty at the close today: Indian stock market indexes closed lower near the day’s low on Friday. The Nifty 50 index declined 80.50 points or 0.44 percent and closed at 18027.65 levels while the Sensex closed lower by 236.66 points or 0.39 percent and finished at 60621.77 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 177.95 points or 0.42 percent on the spot level and closed at 42506.80
The broader markets underperformed the benchmarks today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 244.80 points or 0.78 percent and closed at 31099.80 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended lower by 54.50 points or 0.57 percent and closed at 9569.10 levels.
Nifty index top gainers and losers today
The gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Coal India, Power Grid, HDFC Bank, HDFC, and ITC and the top losers were HUL, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finance, JSW Steel, and Nestle
The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Coforge ltd, Indiamart Inter, and Persistent and the top losers were Hind Zinc, L&T Technology, and TVS Motors
The smallcap top gainers were Engineers India, Mazagaon Dock, and Kalpataru Power while the top losers were Edelweiss, PVR, Carborundum
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance, HDFC Bank, and HUL The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and ONGC
On the sectoral front, Banking, Financial Services, and Oil and Gas closed higher whereas Media, FMCG, Metals, Pharma, and Realty closed lower today.
Global stock market updates
On the global front, other Asian markets were mostly closed in the green today despite negative cues from Wall Street overnight. The market sentiments were optimistic over a Chinese economic recovery this year, although fears of a potential global recession kept the upside capped. The market volume was low in China ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
European stock market indexes opened higher on Friday on investor optimism over the reopening of China’s economy, despite a weak session on Wall Street overnight. Meanwhile, investors ignored UK’s retail sales data that continued to fall in December,
