Nifty end below 17900, Sensex plunges 925 pts today

 

Sensex and Nifty 50 index at the close today: Indian equity markets fell sharply on Tuesday amid weakness in global markets. Sensex and Nifty extended their early losses as the session progressed and closed in deep red.

The Nifty 50 index ended lower by 320.55 points or 1.77 percent and closed at 17806.80 levels while the Sensex declined by 980.93 points or 1.61 percent and finished at 59845.29 levels. The Bank Nifty index closed lower by 740.75 points or 1.75 percent on the spot level and ended at 41668.05

The broader markets underperformed the benchmarks today. The Nifty midcap index was down by 1179 points or 3.76 percent and closed at 30157.65 levels. The Nifty smallcap index declined by 454.95 points or 4.72 percent and closed at 9182.55 levels.

 

Nifty top gainers and losers today

 

The gainers in the Nifty 50 index were only Divis Lab and Titan the top losers were Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, Hindalco, Tata Steel, and Tata Motors

The gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Ajanta Pharma, Syngene Intl, and Mindtree and the top losers were Union Bank, Indiabulls Hsg, and Adani Total Gas

The smallcap top gainers were Shilpa, IOL Chemicals, and Thyrocare Tech while the top losers were Ircron International, Mazgaon Dock, and IRB Infra

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance, Adani Entertainment, and ICICI Bank The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and SBI

On the sectoral front, all sectoral indices were closed in the red today. The sectors that dragged down the markets were PSU Bank, Media, Metals, Realty, Oil & Gas, and Auto

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, other Asian stock market indexes closed in the red following the negative cues from Wall Street overnight. Investors worried about aggressive interest rate hikes by US Fed for a longer period after the strong economic data released on Thursday.

The sentiments were also hit as Japan’s core consumer inflation hit fresh 40-year-old highs in November. European markets are trading almost flat as market volume is thin due to the festive season.
