Sensex, Nifty end higher, mid & smallcaps outperform

Sensex and Nifty Today: Indian stock markets opened flat on Thursday despite negative cues from their Asian peers. Nifty today opened at  16523.55 levels up only 2.7 points while Sensex made a slightly negative opening at 55391.93, down by just 5.6 points. The Indian markets were trading in a narrow range in the morning session and later gained momentum and closed near the day’s high, mid and smallcap indices outperform today.

 

Stock market news and updates today

 

Indian markets continued to trade in the green on the weekly expiry day, led by gains in Telecom, Capital Goods, and Realty sectors. The sentiments were upbeat as FIIs were the buyers in the equity cash segments for the last two days, on Wednesday FIIs bought Rs 1780.94 crore in the equity cash segment.

Trades also took some support from the domestic rating agency ICRA’s report stating that the growth in assets under management (AUM) of non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and housing finance companies (HFCs) is likely to be at 9-11 percent in FY 23 compared to 9.5 in the last fiscal.

Markets got some support as the labor ministry indicated that retirement fund body EPFO added 16.82 lakh, new subscribers in May 2022, nearly 83 percent more than 92 lakh enrolled in the previous year’s same month.

On the global front, the other Asian markets were closed in the red as investors globally remained cautious about steep hikes in Covid cases, and interest rates and their impact on economic growth. Investors also traded cautiously ahead of Japan’s monetary policy, which is expected later in the day. European markets are trading lower as investors eyed the aggressive European Central Bank policy later today.

Sensex and Nifty at the close today

 

The Nifty index gained 84.40 points or 0.51 percent and closed at 16605.25 levels while Sensex was up by 284.42 points or 0.51 percent and finished at 55681.95 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher today by 228.90 points or 0.64 percent on the spot level and ended at 36201

The broader markets outperformed the benchmarks indices, as the Nifty midcap index gained by 394.75 points or 1.38 percent and closed at 29049.15 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed higher by 69.50 points or 0.77 percent and finished at the 9094.90 level

 

Nifty top gainers and losers today

 

The top gainers in the Nifty50 index were IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, Tata Cons. Products, UPL, and Bajaj Finserve whereas the top losers were Dr. Reddys Lab, Kotak Mahindra, SBI Life Insurance, Cipla, and Tech Mahindra. 

The midcap top gainers were Deepak Nitrate, Bharat Elec, and Cummins and the top losers were CC Consumer, V-Gaurd Ind, and JSW Energy.

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcaps index were Aegis Logistics, Karur Vysya, and Kajaria Ceramics and the top losers were  Future Retail, KEI Industries, and Thyrocare Techn

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were IndusInd Bank, Reliance, and Wipro The most active stocks in terms of volume were IndusInd Bank, Wipro, and ONGC 

 On the sectoral front, barring pharma, all other sectoral indices were closed higher today. The sectors that lifted the markets were. PSU Bank, Media, Oil & Gas, Metals, Pvt Banks.
