Nifty end above 17600, Sensex was up by 929 pts today
Sensex up 929 pts, Nifty closed above 17600 levels on the first trading day of 2022
Indian stock market indexes opened positive on the first trading day of 2022. The Nifty today opened at 17387.15, up by 33.1 points while Sensex made a positive opening of 56.27 points at 58310.09 levels. Indian equity benchmark indices extended their previous day’s gains today on account of buying in Banking, Financial, and Auto stocks.
Stock Market News Today
The market sentiments remained upbeat with private reports that India is likely to have one of the highest rates of growth in the world as there are gradual moves towards normalization, even as stimulus and support for vulnerable sectors continue. The report further said sticking to the announced consolidation path by the government in the upcoming budget will give a good signal of control and predictability.
Meanwhile, traders took note of a private survey showing India’s manufacturing sectors ended 2021 on a solid footing despite the slow down reported in December. The IHS Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Manager’s Index in December reported slightly lower to 55.5 from November’s 57.6. The PMI number stayed above the 50-mark means growth whereas below 50-mark is contraction.
On a global front, barring Hang Seng, other major Asian markets were closed in the green today, Nikkei, and Shanghai were closed today. European market indexes are trading higher, FTSE is having a holiday today.
Sensex and Nifty at the Close
At the close, Nifty was up by 271.65 points or 1.57 percent and closed at 17625.70 levels while Sensex gained 929.40 points or 1.60 percent and finished at 59183.22 levels. The Bank Nifty index closed strong today, it was up by 940 points or 2.65 percent on spot and ended at 36421.90 levels.
The broader markets closed higher today, as the Nifty midcap and smallcap index ends positively today. The Nifty midcap index was up by 345.10 points or 1.13 percent and closed at 30788 levels. The Nifty smallcap index gained by129.45 points or 1.15 percent and finished at 11418.45 levels.
Nifty Top Gainers and Losers Today
The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Coal India, Eicher Motors, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserve, and ICICI Bank Whereas the top losers were Cipla, Dr.Reddy, M&M, Divis Lab, and Nestle India.
The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Federal Bank, AB Capital, RBL Bank, and the losers were Dhani Services, Laurus Labs, Sanofi India.
The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were Shilpa, Alkyl Aminies, and Affle India and the losers were APL Apollo, IRB Infra, and KEI Industries.
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Tata Motors, TCS, and Bajaj Finance. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Motors, Coal India, and SBI.
On a sectoral front, barring Pharma all sectoral indices were closed in the green today. The sectors that led the rally were Banking, Financial Services, Metals, Auto, and Media.
