Weekly market updates || Top Nifty gainers and losers for the week ended 19 March

 

Top Nifty Gainers & Losers for the week (15-19 March): Indian stock markets closed almost 2 percent lower during the week ended March 19. The markets started with the negative notes due to a contraction in IIP number and a hike in CPI inflation last Monday. Except for the last trading day market traded negatively due to the rise in US bond yields and concerns about surges of coronavirus infection in India. 

On the last day, the domestic markets bounced back with the support of strong FIIs buying. Moody’s Analytics has projected a 12% India’s GDP forecast for 2021, from their earlier estimates of 9% in November. The double-digit GDP forecast by Moody’s analytics has also created positive sentiments in the market on Friday.

Sensex on a weekly basis declined 933.84 points or 1.84% and closed at 49858.24 levels while Nifty slipped 286.95 points or 1.91% and ended at 14744 levels. The Bank Nifty on the spot price closed lower by 1335.05 points or 3.76% on a weekly basis and finished at 34161.6 level.

The midcap and smallcap indexes underperformed during the week ended 19 March. The Nifty midcap index was down by 702.85 points or 2.92% and closed at 23412.75 levels. The small-cap index closed lower by 276 points or 3.25% and ended at 8206.9 levels

Global markets updates 

 

On the global front, US markets closed lower during the week. The rising bond yields, dop in oil prices, increase in jobless claim created negative sentiments in the US markets. However, the dovish stance by the Fed, the promise to keep the interest rates low, and an increased growth forecast capped the downside of the US markets last week. 

The European markets closed mixed during the week ended 19 March. The European markets gained during the week as some corporates estimate positive earnings for the quarter. The dovish stance maintained by the Central bank to support an economic recovery also cheered the market moods during the week. Whereas the concerns about the resurgence of coronavirus infections capped the upside of the markets. The Asian market indices of China and Japan closed negative during the week.

FIIs and DIIs movement on a weekly basis

 

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were buyers and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were sellers during the week ended 19 March. FIIs bought Rs 5893.68 crores whereas DIIs sold Rs 3654.75 crores during the week. In the last four trading sessions, FIIs are buying continuously in the Indian cash market segment.
