Stock Market Today: Nifty Below 19,800, Sensex Down 65 Pts Ahead of Inflation Data

 

Stock Market Today, 12 Oct 2023: The Indian stock market index ended the volatile session with minor cuts on Thursday. The domestic markets opened slightly higher and traded in a narrow range throughout the session, in the second half markets traded below the neutral lines and ended in the red.

Traders remained on the sidelines ahead of Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for September and Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data for August, later in the day. Some concern also came as Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri warned surging oil prices could hinder the economic recovery of many nations by curbing demand. 

 

Stock Market Indexes Today

 

The Nifty 50 index closed slightly lower by 17.35 points or 0.09 percent and closed at 19794 levels while the Sensex was down by 64.66 points or 0.10 percent and finished at 66408.39 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended slightly higher by 82.30 points or 0.18 percent on the spot level and closed at 44599.20 levels.

The broader markets outperformed their larger peers today, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 69.25 points or 0.17 percent and closed at 40555.50 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended higher by 83.90 points or 0.65 percent at 12950.95 levels.

 

Nifty 50 Top Gainers & Losers 

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were BPCL, Coal India, Maruti, NTPC, and Power Grid, and the top losers were TechM, Apollo Hospital, INFY, TCS, and HCL Tech

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were NMDC, IGL, and SUNTV and the top losers were BDL, Delhivery, and Gujarat Fluochem.

The smallcap top gainers were CAMS, CDSL, and National Aluminium while the top losers were Laxmi Organic, Fin Cables, and MCX

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, INFY, and TCS. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Power Grid, Tata Steel, and Coal India.

On the sectoral front, Media, Auto, and Metal closed higher while the sectors that closed in the red were IT, Realty, and PSU Bank.

 

Global Stock Market Updates Today

 

The other Asian stock market indexes closed higher on Thursday ahead of the US CPI inflation data which is due later in the day. Hang Seng gained the most in the region, up by 1.89 percent. Japan’s Nikkei extended its early gains and closed higher by 1.72 percent, while Australia’s S&P ASX 200 closed flat to the positive.

South Korea’s Kospi made a sharp rally for the second consecutive day and is up by 1.21 percent. Shanghai advanced 0.94 percent, on the back of a rally in bank shares. Elsewhere, the Straits Times and Taiwan closed higher, while the SET Composite ended lower.

European stock markets are trading higher, the sentiments are positive as the morning data showed the UK’s GDP grew 0.2% on month on month basis in August, which was in line with the economist’s expectation. Investors are now looking for the US CPI data which is due later in the day.
