Stock Market Today: Nifty Ends Above 22,100, Sensex Up 282 Pts; Pharma, FMCG Gain
Stock Market Today, 19 February 2024: Indian stock market indexes ended with modest gains on Monday, rising for the fifth consecutive session. The domestic markets opened higher as indicated by the Gift Nifty and after initial volatility extended their early gains. The Nifty index hit an all-time high of 22186.65 level in the afternoon session. However, markets trimmed some intraday profits at higher levels in the last hour and closed with decent gains.
The domestic market sentiments were upbeat due to heavy buying in the frontline stocks including Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, and ITC Sentiment got a boost as India’s outward foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments rose by 25.7 percent on a year-on-year (Y-o-Y) basis to $2.09 billion in January 2024, compared to over $1.66 billion in January 2023.

The Nifty 50 index closed higher by 81.55 points or 0.37 percent and closed at 22122.25 levels while the Sensex was up by 281.52 points or 0.39 percent and finished at 72708.16 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 150.65 points or 0.32 percent on the spot level and closed at 46535.50 levels.
The broader markets also closed higher in line with their larger peers today, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 179 points or 0.36 percent and closed at 49310.95 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended higher by 64.30 points or 0.40 percent at 16258.30 levels.
Nifty 50 Top Gainers & Losers
The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Grasim, Bajaj Finserve, Bajaj Auto, Cipla, and ICICI Bank, and the top losers were Coal India, L&T, Wipro, SBI Life, and HDFC Life.
The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Policy Bazar, FACT, and RVNL and the top losers were Yes Bank, HDFCAMC, and Prestige.
The smallcap top gainers were MRPL, JBM Auto, and Aegis Chemical while the top losers were Karur Vysys, HUDCO, and PNB Housing.
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, SBI, and Reliance. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Coal India, HDFC Bank, and Tata Steel.
On the sectoral front, Pharma, FMCG, and Media closed higher while the sectors that closed in the red were Realty, PSU Bank, and IT.
Global Stock Market Today
The other Asian stock markets mostly closed higher on Monday, as China resumed trading after a week-long holiday. China’s Shanghai index gained the most in the region as the holiday travel data lifted the tourism stocks, while the Hang Seng index fell 1.14% due to a drag down in tech stocks.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed edged lower by 0.04%, while Australia’s S&P ASX 200 closed slightly up by 0.10%. South Korea’s Kospi index also added more than 1% on Monday. Elsewhere, the Straits Times, Taiwan, and SET Composite closed higher, while the Jakarta Composite is trading in the red.
European stock market indexes started the week on a negative note on Monday, following losses in the US markets on Friday. The major sectors are trading in the red, with tech stocks leading the losses, while healthcare is trading edge higher.
