Sensex, Nifty erased early gains, Nifty end below 16700

Sensex and Nifty Today, 5 May 2022: Indian markets opened higher on Thursday amid following positive cues from the global markets. Nifty today opened at 16854.70, up by 177.15 points while Sensex made a positive opening of 586.04 points at 56255.07 levels. Indian markets erased almost all their early gains in the second half and closed flat on Thursday.

The Indian equity markets got support from the positive global cues in the morning, as Fed hiked interest rates by 50 basis points as widely expected. Traders cheered the reports stating that service activities improved further and touched a five-month high in April, driven by new fresh orders and the renewed increase in employment. 

The seasonally adjusted S&P Global Indian Services PMI business activity index has also climbed to 57.9 in April from 53.6 in March, highlighting a sharp rate of expansion that was the fastest since last November amid mounting price pressure. Meanwhile, the largest IPO in the country, insurance major, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) which opened on May 4 was subscribed by around 90 percent so far on the second day.

On the global front, the other Asian markets closed mixed on Thursday, and Nikkie was closed today due to a national holiday. Hang Seng erased its early gains and closed in the red today. European markets are trading higher as Fed rules out aggressive rate hikes on Wednesday and eyes on BoE monetary policy.

Nifty and Sensex indexes at the close today

 

At the close, the Nifty index gained by 5.05 points or 0.03 percent and closed at 16682.65 levels while Sensex was up by 33.20 points or 0.06 percent and finished at 55702.23 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended lower today by 31.70 points or 0.09 percent on spot and ended at 35232.85 levels.

The broader markets were also closed mixed on Thursday. The Nifty midcap index was up by 30.05 points or 0.10 percent and closed at 29104.35 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 74.35 points or 0.75 percent and finished at 9807.10 levels.

 

Nifty top gainers and losers today

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were  Tech Mahindra, Hero Motorcop, Infosys, HCL Tech, and Wipro whereas the top losers were IndusInd Bank, Tata Consumer, Britannia, Nestle, and Ultratech Cement

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Dixon Technologies, BHEL, and COFORGE Ltd and the top losers were Godrej Property, Deepak Nitrate, and Indiamart Inter.

The smallcap top gainers were Ujjivan Small, Bharat Dynamics, and Just Dial and the top losers were Can Fin Home, Sonata, and Future Retail

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance, HDFC Bank, and Tata Steel  The most active stocks in terms of volume were NTPC, ONGC, and ITC

On a sectoral front, IT, Metals, Auto, and Financial Servies closed higher today. The sectoral indices that closed in the deep red were Realty, Healthcare, FMCG, Oil & Gas, and Media.
