Sensex, Nifty end flat amid volatility on F&O expiry day

 

Sensex and Nifty Today: It was a negative start for the Indian stock markets on Thursday amid mixed cues from the global markets. Nifty today opened at 15774.50 levels down by 24.6 points while Sensex made a negative opening of 129.81 points at 52897.16 levels. Indian markets were trading volatile ahead of the month F&O expiry today and later closed flat to the negative today.

Traders remained cautious amid the report that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) council’s two-day meeting concluded without any decision on extending compensation to states- for revenue loss on account of the regime’s implementation five years ago-beyond June 30. This was despite at least two dozen states raising the issue.

Meanwhile, the oil stocks were in focus, as the government has decided to give marketing freedom to domestic crude oil producers, allowing them to sell oil to whosoever they want. The Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced this on Wednesday.

On the global front, the other Asian market indices mostly closed in the red on Thursday due to fears about recession after hawkish comments made by the Fed Chairman last night. Shanghai gained more than 1 percent as China’smanufacturing sectors returned to the expansion zone in June, according to the survey results from the NBS showed that the manufacturing PMI rose to 50.2 in June from 49.6 in May. European markets are trading in the red on inflation worries after the central banks’ warning on Wednesday.

Sensex and Nifty at the close today

 

The Nifty index declined by 18.85 points or 0.12 percent and closed at 15780.25 levels while Sensex was down by 8.03 points or 0.02 percent and finished at 53018.94 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher today by 155.20 points or 0.47 percent on the spot level and ended at 33425.10

The broader markets also closed lower today, the Nifty midcap index declined by 219.40 points or 0.82 percent and closed at 26452.75 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 39.05 points or 0.46 percent and finished at the 8445.25 level

 

Nifty top gainers and losers today

 

The top gainer in the Nifty50 index was Britannia, Axis Bank, HDFC Life, SBI, and Divis Labs whereas the top loser was Bajaj Auto, Cipla, Eicher Motors, BPCL, and Tech Mahindra.

The midcap top gainers were Dhani Service, Shriram Transport, and REC and the top losers were IRCTC, Oil India, and Container Corporation.

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were Bajaj Electricals, Alok Industries, and MCX India and the top losers were Delta Corp, Birla Soft, and Strides Pharma.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance, INFY, and Maruti. The most active stocks in terms of volume were ONGC, Hindalco, and Tata Motors.

On a sectoral front, Banking and Financial services were closed higher today. The sectors that closed in the red were Metals, Auto, IT, Realty, and PSU Bank.
