Nifty up 44 pts, Sensex end at 59,500 amid volatility

 

Sensex and Nifty at the close today: The Indian stock markets traded highly volatile on Monday and later closed in the green. The volatility in the markets due to Q3 earnings. Investors were cautious ahead of the crucial events lined up during the week and on news about Adani group and its exposure to banking stocks.

The Nifty 50 index closed higher by 44.60 points or 0.25 percent and closed at 17648.95 levels while the Sensex gained by 169.51 points or 0.29 percent and finished at 59500.41 levels. The Ban Nifty index also ended higher by 42.15 points or 0.10 percent on the spot level and closed at 40387.45

The broader markets underperformed the frontline index today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 56.05 points or 0.19 percent and closed at 30185.85 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended lower by 9.70 points or 0.10 percent and closed at 9233 levels.

 

Nifty index top gainers and losers today

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Adani Ent, Bajaj Finance, Ultratech Cement, Bajaj Finserve, and HCL Tech and the top losers were Power Grid, JSW Steel, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Auto, and Larsen & Toubro

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Vodafone Idea, Indian Bank, and PB Fintech and the top losers were Patanjali Foods, Adani Wilmar, and Hind Zinc

The smallcap top gainers were Aegis Logistics, Mazagaon Dock, and Indian Bank while the top losers were Eid Pary, Sequent Scientific, ad Edelweiss.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Adani Ent, Adani Ports, and ICICI Bank  The most active stocks in terms of volume were Adani Ports, Tata Steel, and SBI 

On the sectoral front, IT, PSU Bank, Consumer Durables, Financial Services, and Banking sectoral indices closed higher while sectors that closed in the red today were Oil & Gas, FMCG, Media, and Metals 

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, Asian markets closed mostly in the red, after business confidence in South Korea retreated in January, with a Business Survey Index score of 66.0 – down from 71.0 in December. Shanghai and Taiwan closed higher as blue-chip stocks climbed after returning from a weeklong holiday. 

Investors remain cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve interest rate decision which is due on Feb 1. European stock markets are trading marginally lower, as investors are nervous ahead of the ECB, BoE interest rate decision, and PMI data which is due this week.
