Closing Bell: Nifty end near 16600, Sensex up 817 pts

 

Closing Bell: Nifty end near 16600, Sensex up 817 pts today: Indian stock market opened a gap-up on Thursday amid positive cues from other Asian market peers. Globally market sentiments were positive on the hopes of peace talks between Russia-Ukraine and sharp fall in crude oil prices. Nifty today opened at 16757.10 levels, up by 411.75 points while Sensex made a positive opening of 1595.14 points at 56242.47 levels.

Bulls were holding a tight grip over Dalal Street in the morning deals while indices trimmed their early gains in the afternoon session. Other than positive global cues, markets were optimistic as Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said the venture capitalists have played a pivotal role in India’s startup story and the economic growth of the country while addressing the Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association’s (IVCA) conclave

The markets also cheered as the Assembly result updates show that BJP is set to retain power in the 4 states, except Punjab as expected. The international crude oil prices are declined after OPEC member UAE said it supported pumping more oil into the market roiled by supply disruptions due to sanctions on Russia after it invaded Ukraine.

On the global front, Asian markets closed higher on Thursday following an overnight jump in the US markets, after oil price fell sharply from its recent high. South Korea’s Kospi gained, as investors returned to trade from Wednesday’s presidential election. Malaysia’s unemployment rate stood stable. European markets are trading lower on Thursday following strong gains in the previous session ahead of the high levels talks between Russia and Ukraine and the latest policy announcement from the European Central Bank.

Sensex and Nifty indexes at close today

 

At the close, the Nifty index gained by 249.55 points or 1.53 percent and closed at 16594.90 levels while Sensex was up by 817.06 points or 1.50 percent and finished at  55464.39 levels. The Bank Nifty index closed higher by 660.15 points or 1.95 percent on spot and ended at 34475.60 levels.

The broader markets also closed higher today in line with their larger peers. The Nifty midcap index was up by 253.20 points or 0.91 percent and closed at 28038.70 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed higher by138.85 points or 1.40 percent and finished at 10066.50 levels.

 

Top Nifty gainers and losers

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were HUL, Tata Steel, Grasim, JSW Steel, and SBI  whereas the top losers were Coal India, Tech Mahindra, Dr, Reddy’s Lab, ONGC, and TCS

The midcap top gainers were Adani Total Gas, Indiamart Inter, and V-Guard Ind and the top losers were Coforge Ltd, Gujarat Gasm, and Oil India.

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were Kajaria Ceramic, IOL Chemicals, and Welspun India, and the top losers were Bajaj Electric, KEI Industries, Sterlite Techno.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, and Reliance. The most active stocks in terms of volume were ONGC, Tata Motors, and ITC.

On a sectoral front, barring IT all other sectors closed in the green today  The sector that closed higher were FMCG, Metal, PSU Bank, Realty, and Auto
