Nifty down 272 pts, Sensex below 60K, all sectors in red

 

Sensex & Nifty at close: Indian stock markets fell sharply on Wednesday amid weak global cues. The Sensex and Nifty 50 indexes closed below their psychological levels today. The Nifty 50 index closed lower by 272.40 points or 1.53 percent and closed at 17554.30 levels while the Sensex was down by 927.74 points or 1.53 percent and finished at 59744.98 levels.

The Bank Nifty index ended in the red, down by 677.70 points or 1.67 percent on the spot level, and closed at 39995.90 levels. The broader markets also closed in the red today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 345.80 points or 1.13 percent and closed at 30211 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 106.65 points or 1.14 percent at 9244.80 levels.

 

Nifty top gainers & losers

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were ITC, Bajaj Auto, and Divis Labs, and the top losers were Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, Grasim, Bajaj Finance, and JSW Steel

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were PB Fintech, Aurobindo Pharma, and Voltas and the top losers were Adani Wilmar, Aditya Birla F, and Astral Ltd

The smallcap top gainers were IRB Infra, Alok Industries, and Blue Star while the top losers were Shilpa, Just Dial, and Spice Jet

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Adani Enterpr, Reliance, and ICICI Bank The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, SBI, and ICICI Bank

On the sectoral front, all sectoral indices were closed in the red today. The sectors that dragged the most were Metals, Media, PSU Bank, Financial Services, and Banking

 

Global stock market updates

 

The other Asian stock market indexes closed lower on Wednesday following the negative cues from Wall Street overnight. The sentiments were hit as the central bank of New Zealand continue to raise the interest rate by 50 bps to its 14-year high. Hang Seng index declined as investors digested the Budget presented today and as the GDP number shrank by 3.55% in 2022.

European stock markets are trading lower following the negative cues from the US and Asian markets and the escalation of geopolitical tension. Investors remain cautious as they await the latest Fed minutes, which are expected later in the day.
