Nifty 50 below 17900, Sensex holds 60K, Metals drags

 

Sensex and Nifty 50 index at the close today: Indian stock markets erased early gains and closed lower on Monday, despite positive cues from major global markets. The Nifty 50 index declined 61.75 points or 0.34 percent and closed at 17894.85 levels while the Sensex closed lower by 168.21 points or 0.28 percent and finished at 60092.97 levels. The Bank Nifty index also ended lower by 203.70 points or 0.48 percent on the spot level and ended at 42167.55

The broader markets closed in the red today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 75.30 points or 0.24 percent and closed at 31253.05 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended almost flat to negative, down by only 6.75 points, and closed at 9668.95 levels.

 

Nifty 50 index top gainers and losers today

 

The gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Infosys, Wipro, and Hero Motocorp and the top losers were Adani Enterprises, Axis Bank, JSW Steel, TCS, and Hindalco.

The gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Varun Beverages, Union Bank, and PNB and the top losers were Astral Ltd, Jindal Steel, and PB Fintech

The smallcap top gainers were Just Dial, HEG, and IDFC while the top losers were Future Retail, Godfrey Philip, and PVR

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance, HDFC Bank, and Infosys. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, Wipro, and Tata Motors. 

On the sectoral front, PSU Banks, IT, and FMCG sectors closed higher. The sectors that dragged the markets were Media, Metals, Financial Services, and Auto 

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, Asian markets closed mostly in green, after producer prices in Japan were up 0.5 percent in December, slowing from the upwardly revised 0.8 percent increase in November (originally 0.6 percent). Nikkei closed lower as investors were cautious ahead of the BoJ policy meeting during the week.

European markets are trading slightly higher following the positive cues from Asian and US markets on Friday. Market volumes are thin due to a holiday in US markets on Monday.
