Indian Stock Market Weekly Updates (13 – 17 Feb 2023): The Indian stock markets managed to close the week on a positive note. The equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty gained around half a percent while broader markets underperformed during the week. The domestic markets gained three out of five trading sessions during the week.

The Indian stock market started the week on a negative note due to cautiousness ahead of the inflation data. The domestic retail inflation accelerated while wholesale price inflation eased in January. The economic data released during the week showed that the export declined but the trade deficit narrowed, as imports fell at a faster rate than export. The markets got support from falling crude oil prices and from foreign investors buying.

However, the upside reminds capped as the economic data from the US showed strong retail sales and hotter-than-expected inflation readings in January. The hawkish comments from the US Fed officials for 50 bps interest rate hikes in March dented the market sentiments on the last day of the week.

Among the sectors, Nifty IT, Metals, and FMCG sectors gained during the week while selling pressure was witnessed in Media, PSU Bank, Realty, and Pharma. Foreign institutional investors (FIIS) turned buyers this week, they bought Rs 4005.85 crore worth of shares while Domestic Institutional Investors invested Rs 2735.1 crore during the week.

Indian Stock Market Indexes (13- 17 Feb 2023)

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 319.87 points or 0.53%, and closed at 61002.57, while the Nifty closed positive, up by 87.7 points or 0.49%, and ended at 17944.2 levels. The Bank Nifty index was down by 427.65 points or 1.03 % and finished at 41131.75 levels.

The broader markets underperformed the benchmark indices during the week. The Nifty midcap index ended lower by 387.4 points or 1.25 percent, and at 30642.05 levels. The Nifty small-cap index was down 108.85 points or 1.15 percent and ended at 9417.55 levels during the week.
